The Kiribati Outer Islands Food And Water Project is under the MELAD, located in Tanaea at the Agrirculture and Livestock Division is working on the 9 Kiribati islands ( Abemama, Nonouti, Tabiteuea North, Tabiteuea South, Onotoa, Beru, Nikunau, Tamana and Arorae).
The KOIFAWP outer islands staff start arriving on Tarawa on Monday 13/06/2022 until 18/06/02022. However the programme started on the 14/06/2022 with island staff from TAbiteuea North, Abemama and Nonouti but the formal opening was held on 16.06/2022 in Bikenibeu at Fr Yelds Green House at the parish priests premise. Hon Minister Ruateki Tekaiara from MELAD gave a opening remarks and welcomed the Australian High Commissioner, Chinese Ambassador and those presenting on that day. The Project Director Danietta Apisai then continued with her presentation based on the objectives of the project, "people living in outer islands communities have healthy and sustainable livelihoods". She emphasised the benefit that the 9 project islands will gain from the project. The Original islands communities have recieved RHWS which they are drinking from now which the other 5 islands will soon recieve their RWHS which they have all gain agricultural skills and knowledge which they are using now in theri home gardens. They have also been trained on cooking healthy food from their their garden products; leafy, root crops and fruits for their families.
During the 3 days of official workshop, our network partners from ministries gave theri inputs on their special areas like women, NGO and Child protection division from MWYSSA, China embassy, New Zealand and Australia high commissioner for small grants, MTCIC on money management, Office of the Beretitenti on Climate Change, MHMS on water management, MELAD-ALD on livestock and agriculture. KOIFAWP PMU Staff gave their on other different days outside official workshop days.
They also have a chance to visits homes and did their demonstration and practical on the castrating piglets.
The closing of the workshop was done on Saturday 18/06/2022. The KOIFAWP outer islands staff start returning to their home islands on MOnday 20/06/2022 with excitement and eagerness to carry out their trainings on what they have learnt from the annual workshop.
